WORDS FROM THE MUAYTHAI COMMUNITY

REMEMBERING ANDY THOMSON

Andy Thomson was pillar of the Muaythai world, a wellspring of knowledge, an instructor who shaped and guided hundreds of peoples lives through the sport and outside of it.

Born in Canada to parents of Scottish decent, in 1994 Andy opened the longstanding gym Kiat Busaba (or more commonly known as Lanna Muaythai) in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. Not long after, Andy opened a second gym – a mountain retreat – named Doi Modt, outside of the city. In December of 2017 Andy was hospitalized and diagnosed with Guillané-Barre syndrome. Andy faced a long and difficult road to recovery, and passed away this October 2018. Funeral services were held in Thailand where he was visited by many students, friends, and loved ones.

Muaythai Canada is reaching out to the Muaythai Community to collect, organize, and share memoirs and memories. Andy’s is a legacy to preserve. If you have stories, pictures, anecdotes, or goodbyes you wish to share, please email them to info@muaythaicanada.org.
